Roles and positions
The five positions on Summoner's Rift, what each one is responsible for, and how the 2026 role quests reward playing them.
Describes the 2026 season
A team of five splits across the map in the same way nearly every game. Each position has its own job, its own usual champions and its own role quest.
Top
Jungle
Mid
Bot
Support
Top
Alone in the longest lane, far from the rest of the team. Top laners are usually fighters and tanks who can survive on their own, win long one-on-one trades and later either lead the team into fights or pull enemies away by pushing a side lane.
Jungle
No lane at all. The jungler farms the neutral camps between the lanes, appears in lanes to set up kills (a gank), and decides when the team fights over epic monsters. Every jungler takes Smite.
Mid
The shortest lane, in the centre of the map, which makes it the quickest to leave and come back to. Mid laners are often mages and assassins who can clear a wave fast and then move to help a side lane.
Bot
Shared with the support. The bot laner, often called the ADC (attack damage carry) or marksman, deals steady damage from range, is weak early and needs items, and becomes the team's main source of damage late in the game.
Support
Also in the bot lane, but taking almost no farm. Supports protect their carry, start fights with crowd control, and own the team's vision. Their starting item pays them gold for hitting enemies instead of for minions.
Role quests
Junglers and supports have long had a quest built into their starting item. Since the 2026 season every position has one, given for the role you were assigned in champion select. It fills up as you play that position: farming in your lane, taking turrets and plates, joining objectives. Completing it grants a bonus tied to the role.
| Role | What the quest rewards (2026) |
|---|---|
| Top | Experience, and a level cap above 18. |
| Jungle | Move speed in the jungle and river. |
| Mid | A bonus to damage stats. Changed during the season; see the current patch notes. |
| Bot | Extra gold, including more from every minion. |
| Support | Room to carry control wards outside your item slots. |
