Ranked system

How ranked play works: the ten tiers from Iron to Challenger, divisions, league points, queues and placement games.

Ranked games are played on Summoner's Rift with draft pick and bans, and they move you up or down a public ladder. Your account has to reach a minimum summoner level and own enough champions before the ranked queues open.

Tiers

  • IronIron
  • BronzeBronze
  • SilverSilver
  • GoldGold
  • PlatinumPlatinum
  • EmeraldEmerald
  • DiamondDiamond
  • MasterMaster
  • GrandmasterGrandmaster
  • ChallengerChallenger

There are ten tiers. The first seven, Iron to Diamond, each have four divisions, from IV (lowest) to I. The top three, Master, Grandmaster and Challenger, have no divisions: players there are ranked purely by league points, and Grandmaster and Challenger hold a limited number of players per region.

League points

  • A win earns league points (LP) and a loss costs them. How many depends on how your hidden matchmaking rating compares with your visible rank: a player who is climbing faster than their rank gains more per win.
  • Reaching 100 LP moves you up a division. Losing at 0 LP can drop you down one.
  • Moving into a new tier comes with a short protection from being demoted straight back.

Queues

QueueWho you queue with
Ranked Solo/DuoAlone or with one friend. The rank most players mean when they say "rank".
Ranked FlexAlone, or in a group of two, three or five. A separate rank.

Placements and seasons

Your first few games in a queue are placement games, after which you are shown your starting rank. The ranked year is split into seasons; at the start of a new one, ranks are partly reset and you place again. Rewards for the year go to players who reach a high enough tier.
