Fighting Around a Pit

Almost every teamfight that decides a game happens next to a drake or a Baron, and the pit changes the geometry. Which side you stand on is worth more than most of your items.

// What you will be able to do

  • Take the near side of a pit, and know what it is worth
  • Say when the objective is the win condition and when the fight is
  • Stop walking into a pit to contest something you were never going to take

The games you lose in one moment almost always end at a pit. Not because objectives are worth so much, but because a pit is a hole in the ground with two entrances, and a fight in a hole is decided by who is standing at the top of it. That geometry is learnable in one lesson and most players have never thought about it once.

// A pit is a hole with two entrances, and the sides are not equal
  1. 1

Your side of the pit - Nearest your base. Every retreat from here runs toward help, and their engage has to cross the pit to reach you. This is the whole lesson, and it is one step of walking.

  2. 2

Their side - The same fight with the arrows reversed. Standing here means every mistake you make is a long walk from safety and every mistake they make is a short one.

  3. 3

In the hole - Below both teams, with a wall between you and everyone. Whoever is standing here when the fight starts is fighting uphill against people who can see them and cannot be seen back.
