Lesson 4 of 5 · 6 min
Walk First
In the mid game the support's job is to be the first body around every corner. Not bravery: arithmetic, because you are the cheapest thing on the map to catch.
// What you will be able to do
- Lead every rotation instead of following your carry into it
- Check the corners that are about to matter, not the ones you are already past
- Recognise the moments where walking first is not worth what it risks
Watch a team walk into a fight they lose and rewind ten seconds: almost always, the carry turned a corner before anybody else. The player with the most items found out what was behind the wall by being hit by it. There is a player on that team whose gold is worth a fraction of theirs and who was standing behind them, and that is the whole lesson.
| Moment | Who walks first | What it saves |
|---|---|---|
| Rotating through the river | You, one screen ahead | The carry walking into a waiting team |
| Approaching a pit | You, into the brush beside it | Starting an objective on top of five people |
| Sieging a | You, at the front of the wave | Your carry being the closest target |
| Retreating through your own jungle | Not you: you are last | The person being chased is not the cheapest one |
21:00. Your team is rotating from mid toward the
pit. You are ahead of them. Click the spot you check first.
4 spots are live on the map. Pick one.

Walk First: the practical half
Everything above is the concept. Behind the gate: the situations where it applies, the mistake that costs the most, the interactive drills, and a field assignment measured against your own ranked games.
