The Darkin Scythe

Kayn wields an ancient weapon and fights Rhaast, the darkin within it, for control. Either the Darkin will triumph, or Kayn will master Rhaast and become the Shadow Assassin. Darkin: Heal for a percentage of spell damage dealt to champions. Shadow Assassin: For the first few seconds in combat with enemy champions, deal bonus damage.

As Kayn

Look at the line-up of both your team and the enemy's team when picking your form.
Remember that nearby enemies can see which wall you're in.

Against Kayn

Umbral Trespass requires Kayn to damage a target first. Try to dodge Blade's Reach to deny him a long range cast of Umbral Trespass.
When Kayn is in terrain near you, you will get a visual warning on the edge of the terrain he's in.
Damage Kayn while he's in Shadow Step to shorten its duration, or apply hard crowd control (stun, charm, knockup, etc) to end Shadow Step immediately.
// Lore

A peerless practitioner of lethal shadow magic, Shieda Kayn battles to achieve his true destiny—to one day lead the Order of Shadow into a new era of Ionian supremacy. He wields the sentient darkin weapon Rhaast, undeterred by its creeping corruption of his body and mind. There are only two possible outcomes: either Kayn bends the weapon to his will... or the malevolent blade consumes him completely, paving the way for the destruction of all Runeterra.

Ability details
Innate: Kayn has a secondary experience bar that tracks progress toward his Darkin Slayer and Shadow Assassin forms. He gathers orbs from champion takedowns and each instance of damage (excluding damage over time) dealt against champions. Once he has earned enough orbs, he unlocks a form based on whether he earned more from melee or ranged champions (for Darkin Slayer and Shadow Assassin, respectively), with the other form unlocked later.
While near his team's summoning platform, Kayn can choose a form to enter transformation over 6 seconds, becoming invulnerable, untargetable, and unable to act for the duration. At the end of the transformation he is restored to full health and mana. The transformation will grant a passive bonus and permanently empower some of Kayn's abilities based on the form chosen. He gains a one-time Homeguard once the transformation is complete.

Kayn cannot activate the transformation while he is affected by cast-inhibiting crowd control or a lockout that disables abilities.
Shadow Assassin Bonus: Upon entering combat with enemy champions, Kayn becomes empowered for 3 seconds to deal 20 – 40 (based on level) of post-mitigation physical and magic damage dealt against enemy champions as bonus magic damage. This effect cannot trigger again until Kayn has been out of combat with champions for over 8 seconds, with the timer being reset if he recasts

Notes

  • The Shadow Assassin Bonus will not be triggered nor have its out-of-combat timer be refreshed if Kayn deals true damage.
  • If the Shadow Assassin Bonus is granted by Kayn dealing damage, the triggering instance of damage will benefit from the bonus.
  • Unlike normal damage modifiers, the Shadow Assassin Bonus does not inherit damage tags from the source.
  • Entering transformation will not destroy in-flight projectiles.
  • Melee orbs grant 2 points per hit and 6 points per takedown.
  • Ranged orbs grant 3 points per hit and 7 points per takedown.
  • The amount of points received per orb is multiplied by 3;3+(10-3)/8*(x-1) for 6; then + (10-3)/8*x*1.15 (based on level).
  • The bar gets filled up completely at 500 points.
  • If the two forms are within 8% of each other, the last champion range type hit will determine the winner. If both types are hit at the same time, the transformation will default to Darkin Slayer.
  • Each side's bar has a bucket system, starting at 60 points.
  • Each time an orb is taken the system checks if there's an amount of points in the bucket equal to or higher than the amount received from the orb.
  • The bucket fills by 0.8 points per second if out of champion combat for 70 seconds.
  • Damage dealt by damage over time effects and specifically First Strike and Summon Aery will not grant orbs.
  • The following table refers for interactions while Kayn is transforming:
